THE BIRTH OF SAAB CARS
Saab is widely recognised as a Swedish defence and security company with more than 80 years of history, yet many people still associate the name with its former automobile business, Saab cars.
The company was founded in 1937 in Trollhättan, Sweden, as an aircraft manufacturer created to supply the Swedish Air Force as Europe prepared for another major conflict. Its full name, Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, formed the now-famous acronym Saab. The company’s headquarters soon moved to the university city of Linköping, which remains Saab's largest operational base today. It was here, in 1945, that Saab began exploring diversification, leading to the launch of a project focused on developing motor cars.
